Free photo backup: Keepluma vs iCloud, NAS and cloud drives
Already own a Mac and iPhone and want to keep a growing photo library without starting a subscription or learning server deployment? Keepluma Free offers a simple starting point: one account, one mobile device and one main computer, with no expiry. Originals use your own storage, so library growth does not automatically create a service fee. Choose Personal, Family or Premium Family when you need more devices, members or backup computers. Original photos and videos stay on your own Mac, with end-to-end encrypted transfers: free to start, simple to use and focused on local privacy.
Why Free matters: start a large library with no service fee
Keepluma Free is not a time-limited trial, and you do not need a paid plan to use its allowance. Instead of receiving a small cloud quota, you keep originals on your own Mac storage. A 100GB, 500GB or larger library does not automatically incur a service fee while storage is available and allowances are met. Local and cross-network direct connections are not subject to plan relay bandwidth limits or platform traffic quotas; actual speed depends on devices, disks and networks. Free is particularly attractive for one person using one mobile device, mainly backing up at home. Zero service fee does not include hardware, electricity, networking or cloud disaster recovery.
Cloud services also offer free allowances. Apple includes 5GB of iCloud storage; Google describes up to 15GB shared with Gmail and Drive, subject to the allowance available to your account. Those are cloud capacities, whereas Keepluma Free provides service rights using your own storage. Your disk is not free cloud space. For a large library on an existing Mac with enough disk space, the benefit is avoiding a cloud-capacity purchase solely because photos exceed a few gigabytes.
Ease of use: save photos without deploying a server
Running your own photo server can involve installing services or containers, configuring storage and accounts, arranging remote access, updating software, backing up databases and troubleshooting permissions and networking. For households without technical experience, learning and maintenance can cost more time than the software saves. Keepluma focuses on installing the apps, creating a space on your Mac and linking your phone. You do not have to deploy a photo server, maintain a database or enter a server address. Your computer and disks still need to be available; iOS permissions, background scheduling and connectivity affect backup progress.
Compare the main options
| Option | Capacity and cost | Setup and upkeep | Photo location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keepluma | Free has no expiry; use your storage and upgrade for members, devices or relay needs | App-led setup; no self-deployed photo server | Storage used by your Mac |
| iCloud Photos | Cloud storage subscription tiers | Convenient system integration; Apple manages the cloud | Apple cloud and local copies according to settings |
| NAS + photo software | Hardware, disks and additional backup costs | Configure storage, accounts and remote access; maintain hardware | Your NAS |
| Cloud drive | Capacity and service-based plans | Convenient upload and sharing; check sync and recovery rules | Provider cloud |
| Self-hosted gallery, such as Immich | Storage and server costs; licensing varies | Deployment, upgrades, database and media backups | Your server or NAS |
A larger library does not have to raise your service fee
Keepluma plans differ by members, mobile devices and backup computers. Growing from 100GB to 200GB or 500GB does not automatically change your tier when storage is sufficient and your device needs stay the same. Hardware, electricity, networking and independent copies are extra. Available disk space, space settings and safety reserves limit capacity: it is not unlimited storage. This model is particularly worth comparing if you already own a Mac and storage.
| Plan | Quarterly / annual (USD) | Total members | Mobile devices per member | Backup computers | Relay sending cap per device |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Free, no expiry | 1 | 1 | 0 | 128 kbps |
| Personal | $3.00 / $10.00 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 1 Mbps |
| Family | $6.00 / $20.00 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 4 Mbps |
| Premium Family | $12.00 / $40.00 | 9 | 5 | 2 | 8 Mbps |
Free has no billing period, zero-price order or automatic renewal agreement. Paid prices are overseas website service fees in USD. Members include the owner; each space has one main computer. Personal’s three mobile devices belong to one account, not three people or Macs. Family members do not each need a plan for the same space. App Store prices and currencies follow the store. A device’s relay cap is shared across all its sending tasks, not granted per connection. Direct connections are not subject to that cap; real speeds depend on network conditions.
Backup computers: another copy of your memories
Family includes up to one backup computer and Premium Family up to two, following the main library in one direction. Supply your own computers and enough storage, and check actual synchronization: linking a device does not mean backup is complete. Consider another location when practical. A mirror is not independent version history; keep an independent or offline copy of irreplaceable photos and test recovery. NAS RAID likewise does not replace independent backup.
Photos and videos stay local, with end-to-end encrypted transfers
Family photos reveal children, homes, travels and everyday life. Keepluma keeps original photos and videos on storage used by your own Mac, rather than entrusting the whole library and its thumbnails to media cloud storage. This reduces exposure to a cloud media-store breach, accidental public access or a provider’s storage-handling mistake. You keep control over where originals live and how many copies to retain, without handing custody of the entire family library to a cloud provider.
Protection also covers the journey between devices. Photo and video transfers between phone and computer are encrypted end to end: the sending device encrypts the content and the receiving device decrypts it. If network conditions require a relay, it forwards ciphertext without decrypting the media or creating a cloud album. Using a relay does not turn the transfer into plaintext cloud traffic. The control platform stores no media, thumbnails, filenames, EXIF or media hashes. Accounts, device relationships, connection coordination and payments still require essential cloud services; local storage does not mean zero data collection.
Choose what fits your household
Already have a Mac, a large library and no wish to learn server deployment? Keepluma is worth considering. For system photo synchronization, consider iCloud; for general household storage, a NAS; for managed online storage, a cloud drive; for experienced server users, Immich; for transferring to existing storage, PhotoSync. Keepluma is for Mac and iPhone, with no Windows or Android client or web gallery. Sync, mirrors and independent backups can work together: know where every original is actually saved.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need server skills to use Keepluma?
No self-deployed photo server or database maintenance is required. Install the apps, create a space on your Mac and link your phone. You still need a working computer, storage, connectivity and the required system permissions.
Does Free expire or start charging as my library grows?
Free is not a trial, has no expiry and does not automatically charge for more photos on your own storage. It allows one account, one mobile device and one main computer, with no backup computer allowance. Choose a paid tier for more allowances or a higher relay rate. Hardware and networking remain your costs.
Does deleting a phone photo delete the computer copy?
Deleting from the phone’s system library does not remove resources already fully saved on the computer. Verify completion first: a thumbnail, connection or started upload is not proof of a complete backup.
Can it directly back up every iCloud photo?
Not every visible phone item is necessarily backed up. Keepluma does not proactively download iCloud-only originals. Check original availability, permissions and actual backup coverage. iCloud’s own edits and deletions synchronize across connected devices.
Can uploads continue while my Mac is off?
No uploads can reach an unavailable main computer, and access that depends on it is affected. Phone caches are not complete backups. Consider managed cloud storage if you want access without maintaining local hardware.
Does a backup computer replace every other backup?
It adds a copy, but a mirror is not independent version history. Keep independent or offline copies of important photos and periodically test recovery.
Can I use Free away from home?
You can attempt remote access when device, identity and content permissions allow it. Cross-network direct connections have no plan relay cap. When a relay is needed, Free limits each device’s aggregate sending rate to 128 kbps, so large videos will be slow. Connectivity and speed depend on both networks, the computer being online and storage availability; not every network is guaranteed to work.
Are my photos deleted when paid service ends?
When all valid service sources end, the account falls back to Free without deleting originals, private libraries or caches for that reason. Continued use must meet Free allowances and identity and content permissions. Excess members and devices follow downgrade admission rules; not all family or backup-computer benefits remain, and not every device can continue unchanged.
